Ha Fa Shan Boulders

First of all I want to thank, hongkongclimbing.com. They provided me with all the maps and directions I needed to get out and climb.

Journey // Bouldering

I took the Tsuen Wan MTR out to Tsuen Wan, boarded the 39M bus and there I was, at the Yuen Tsuen trail head.

I spotted some wicked mites on this leaf.

3/4ths of the trail was concrete, either steps or paved planar.

Vines and tree.

There were so many dogs along the trail, luckily for me, these were fenced.

Boulders at the summit.

Gatekeepers

747

My old school map I sketched out before I left.

There were a few of these graves / tombs randomly placed on the hillside.

Boulders coming into focus.

Truly a city of mountains and skyscrapers. I like that the skyscrapers have got nothing on the surrounding mountains, quite humbling.

Summit Boulders. My first attempt up here was traversing the face from left to right, proved to be quite difficult.

Out of nowhere, at least 50 elderly hikers came through. I was climbing, face against the rock, as they started to show up. They took a water break here, and watched me climb. I needed to heel hook with my right leg. Once I did, I got a huge "Ahhhh" from the audience. Quite amusing. The problem is dubbed "Traverse" and is rated a V2.

I'll have to project this one, as I was successful at only 3/4ths of the route. I had to take it easy with no spotter or crash pad. I really don't want to hurt myself up on a mountain, in a foreign country, with no health insurance.

To get a better picture of what I was going through here is a video of Fred doing it quite well: FRED on Traverse V2.

Notice the white chalk on the rock. That is a good indicator of where one's hands go for a specific problem. It shows me my path and simultaneously tells me where the "good" holds are.

This face is where I spent most of my time. It was about 25 feet high of granite. I was able to onsight two of the routes.

  2. Up on that hill it was hot. Hot enough to drink a liter and a half of water, and get sunburned.
